What is sperm freezing?

Semen cryopreservation is a procedure to preserve sperm cells. Semen can be used successfully indefinitely after cryopreservation. For human sperm, the longest reported successful storage is 21 years.

Sperm freezing is suitable for ejaculated and surgically retrieved samples. Depending on the number and quality of sperm in the sample and also of the reason forsperm freezing, it has to be decided, whether one sample will be enough or more samples are needed.

Sperm cryopreservation is recommended in these cases:

  • For men who have to undergo a medical therapy that would affect their fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation.
  • For men who have to undergo long-term medical treatment during which they are not allowed to conceive due to increased risks of having a baby with abnormalities.
  • For sperm or testicular tissue collected via extraction methods (TESE), to avoid going through the TESE procedure for next IVF-treatment.
  • Men who will not be available at time of the IVF/ICSI procedure.
  • Men who experience difficulty in producing a semensample when required.
  • For men with a very low sperm concentration, since those patents would be at risk to become azoospermic with time.

When the frozen sample, whether the origin was semen or testicular tissue, is planned for use the embryologist starts the thawing procedure after collecting the oocytes, to be able to perform the desired IVF/ICSI procedure on time.

According to UAE law sperm can be cryopreserved for a maximum of 5 years, with an annual fee renewal.
