What is Oligospermia?

Also known as oligozoospermia, it is a condition when the sperm count in a man’s ejaculate is lesser than the minimum required for conception. According to WHO, oligospermia occurs when the sperm count is less than 20 million sperms per milliliter. This condition is the most common cause of decreased chances of conception and infertility in men.

What causes Oligospermia?

Causes can be due to various reasons, but canbe linked to men who have:

  • Testicular trauma
  • Vasectomy
  • Heavy intake of drugs, excessive alcohol and smoking
  • Regular strenuous activities
  • Sexually transmitted diseases, like Chlamydia
  • Testicular infections etc

Does it have any symptoms?

There are no evident symptoms of oligospermia. The defining character of oligospermia is low sperm count. Apart from this, symptoms are usually of the condition or sexually transmitted disease, which may lead to oligospermia.

How is oligospermia diagnosed?

The best way to diagnose this problem is through laboratorial tests. These help in determining the exact sperm count, on the basis of which the doctor can suggest the best treatment. There are numerous of tests that can aid your purpose. These include:

  • Sperm motility test
  • Sperm count test

How does it affect fertility?

With the sperm count being low, it becomes quite difficult to achieve pregnancy naturally. It also greatly depends on the health of the female partner. With a combination of a few factors regarding the health of both the partners, some can able to conceive even with oligospermia. Others, who are not able to do so, take the help of medical procedures like artificial insemination, IVF, etc.

Can oligospermia be treated?

The doctor suggests the treatment method according to the intensity of one’s problem. Mild oligospermia can be treated by making certain lifestyle changes, like:

  • Improved diet
  • Gaining/losing weight
  • Stop smoking and reducing alcohol intake, etc

Certain medicines help restore balance to hormonal levels and provide essential vitamins, which helps to enhance sperm production and increase sperm count. Once the sperm count is restored, the couple may conceive naturally or with the help of assisted reproduction methods like IVF, ICSI, etc.
